Bio

Steve Burnett is an improvisational musician who played alto clarinet and saxophone when young, and currently plays Chapman Stick, theremin, and electric upright bass. He performs in several improvisational, cinematic, and ambient groups of musicians in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina. Steve's interest in collaborating with non-musicians led to projects such as working with the painters Nemo and Paul Friedrich. Playing art gallery openings allows him to explore relationships between sound and physical objects.

Active in the local music scene, Steve maintains the NC Goth gothic/industrial website and the NC Prog (progressive rock) mail list. He was involved in the now-defunct AIM (Alliance for Improvised Music) and 919noise collectives, acts as the local rep for dorkbot and Copynight, started a nascent branch of the Phonographers Union, and hosts house concerts for improvised, experimental and related music at badgerhaus.

(Send email if interested in dorkbot, copynight, or phonographers union topics. )

Current projects:

  • Subscape Annex - ambient/industrial improvisational looping
  • Ouroboros - organic bass horn parasitism and symbiosis
  • Cab Caligari - instrumental acoustic cello and electric upright arachnobass, fiddling while the Weimar Republic burns
  • Shesha - a hundred-headed naga of electroacoustic double bass
